Commissioned by Groundwork North East & Cumbria and developed in close collaboration with the Port of Blyth, an array of Shelter Shells was installed at Commissioners Quay on the River Blyth. A series of chains supports the shells beneath the historic coal trestle works, once part of one of Europe’s largest coal-loading quays.Much of the Blyth Estuary is now hard-edged, with relatively limited structural diversity at the water’s edge. The suspended Shelter Shell array creates a Fish Wall beneath the existing industrial structure, introducing additional three-dimensional habitat, textured surfaces, crevices and sheltered spaces. This added complexity helps establish a wider range of ecological niches within the estuary’s important transitional and intertidal environment.
