Shilshole Marina, Seattle, USA

A series of Shelter Shells was installed at Shilshole Marina in Seattle alongside a floating research salt marsh as part of the University of Washington’s Sweetgrass Project. The work involved researchers including Mason Bowles, Nancy Rottle and Rob Zisette, among others, with installation support from EarthCorps.

 

The installation provides an opportunity to observe the development of submerged habitat alongside the floating salt-marsh system and to compare colonisation in Pacific marine conditions with Shelter Shell projects in freshwater, Atlantic and estuarine environments. These contrasting installations show how a common complex habitat structure can support distinctly different ecological communities in response to local environmental conditions.
