Fort Point, Boston, USA

An array of Shelter Shells was installed beneath a pontoon access quay at Fort Point in central Boston, just inland from the Boston Tea Party Museum. Working progressively with the falling tide, the team suspended the shells beneath the structure, introducing complex underwater habitat into a waterway otherwise characterised by substantial historic granite walls.

The installation complements an estuarine floating wetland at the same location, creating habitat at the water surface and below. Fort Point is an active urban waterway used for dragon boating and other recreation, demonstrating how suspended reef ecologies can be integrated into busy city waterfronts. The project was commissioned by Alexandria Real Estate and delivered with support from the Charles River Conservancy and Save the Harbor/Save the Bay.
